Maine with 2people1life

Ah Maine! Vivid fall colours, picturesque harbour towns, lobster rolls and great beer. Our good friends, 2people1life have travelled all over the world and chose Maine as their favourite place to settle down and we can certainly see why. Sitting on their front porch on crisp sunny autumn mornings looking out on the bay whilst sipping hot coffee was something special. We spent most of our time in Maine in Belfast, catching up with Alex and Lisa and getting to know new friends Megan and Mike, eating all kinds of feasts they cooked for us and doing some final prep on our camper before a long journey. North American roadtrip Week 3

Where have we been?
On our last day in Belfast, Maine we hit up the town and stumbled upon a mussels and beer festival. We tried different ales with a shared bowl of chips, followed by an Italian dinner and a freezing walk home – it was a great send off from 2people1life. Since then we have travelled down the coast in Maine, stayed in Vermont for two days and on to a campsite in New York State about 2 hours north from NYC.

Home is where you park it – update

Sometime in January 2016 we had a realisation about Daisy and our planned trip to Canada and the USA. The realisation was that she would not be the right vehicle for our adventures. The fact was she would end up being the perfect vehicle to take away on weekends and tour Europe, but with her brand new interior, shiny paint and alloy wheels we couldn’t imagine taking her on a 12 month adventure on crazy roads in Mexico.

Rather than leave her in a lockup or in storage for 12 months,we took the hard decision to sell her to people that would use her as we had originally intended. After 6 months of hard work finishing her, too many late nights and hardly seeing our friends, family or each other she was sold to a lovely couple who couldn’t wait to get out in her. It was all worth it and we know she went to a good home.

So what next……well we learnt a lot with Daisy and exactly what we wanted out of a camper. As our trip got closer we considered getting a camper in the USA. The upside would be that its technically more cost effective to buy in the USA as campers are not as sought after as in the UK. The two big drawbacks are import duty if we were to bring it home and that we’d be jumping in to a van that was unknown.

So it’s long overdue…….say hi to Rocky!!!

North American roadtrip week 2

Canada to Maine

We’re in Maine! Rocky arrived on Thursday last week, the whole process of picking him up was quite straightforward and quick. We spent the first day with our van hunting down the right gas fittings for Canada / USA. We set off on Sunday morning and drove through the Bay of Fundy to the US border.

Eats / coffee
Confession: as we travelled we stopped in Tim Hortons / McDonalds for free wifi and coffee. When in Maine, lobster is a must to try and Young’s lobster pound in Belfast did not disappoint. Although Michael had a hot dog, he’s not a lobster fan 🙂

Vanlife
It was great to hit the road and even though it rained all day our first night camping was enjoyable. We stayed in an RV park on the beach in St Martins, cooked dinner, turned heating on, it was cozy. We’re staying with friends (the awesome 2people1life) in Maine, giving the van a bit of maintenance, while eating like kings.
Next: Driving through fall colours in New England and camping in New York!

North American roadtrip Week 1

Where are we?

Nova Scotia, Canada all week, staying with the family while we wait for our campervan to arrive. Canada is even more beautiful than I expected.

When our campervan arrives we will head to the USA, starting in Maine eventually making our way to the west coast and then Mexico for winter.

Coffee / places to eat

We’ve visited some great local spots with our relatives:
Just Us cafe, at their roastery Grand Pre on our way apple picking.
The Good Day cafe in Fall River.
And a great little organic coffee place in Pegy’s Cove with a colourful terrace at the back, just look for a green house.

Vanlife

We’re looking forward to our campervan arriving so we can hit the road soon. Vanlife this week consisted of shopping for some tools and a few bits for our kitchen that we didn’t bring from the UK as we shipped the van empty. We are currently waiting for our camper to clear customs, the boat it was on arrived in Halifax last night…

Next: we head for Maine, USA hopefully soon
