Small mountain towns of Colorado

We weren’t sure if we would be able to make it to Colorado based on weather and road conditions in November. Warmer than usual weather meant we could change our plans to swing through Colorado on our way west. We managed to spend almost two weeks there before winter storms rolled in and we fled for New Mexico. We completely bypassed interstate highways since our bus can do a maximum of 55mph and slower up the hill in altitude so we took it slowly on country roads. We ended up visiting a few small towns in between mountain vistas and wild camping that we absolutely loved so we wanted to share them here.

Lots of character, great friendly vibes and tasty places to eat or stop for coffee are usually good indicators that we’ll love a place. Our first stop was Lyons, just outside Rocky Mountain National Park and was our base for that area.

We managed to connect with online friends Barenaked family, who we had admired for a while and they are just as awesome and funny in real life as we expected, with a lot of wisdom about unconventional lifestyles.

They gave us a tour of the Tiny House Hotel, Wee Casa, which looks super cosy, although we didn’t stay there as we have our own even tinier home 🙂 What a great concept though! We love these tiny homes.

After Lyons, we headed towards charming Salida and remote Westcliffe, known for its dark skies – a great place for star watching. We were a bit gutted that the day we arrived, the night was lit up by the brightness of full moon, but our stay there was super pleasant thanks to hospitality of new friends Paul & Coco.

And a few of our favourite images from the Rocky Mountain National Park. Our bus did well carrying us through the mountain roads in altitudes ranging from 8000 – 11000 feet.
